RSST - together with partners the Forestry Commission, Natural England and the Wildlife Trusts - are developing plans for a co-ordinated large scale red squirrel conservation project for the whole of northern England. A development team has been established to finalise plans in consultation with landowners, volunteers and red squirrel experts. Robert Benson has been appointed by RSST as project development manager with funding from the Forestry Commission. He is also Chairman of the well regarded Penrith and District Red Squirrel Group. Cumbria and Northumberland are also very well served by existing volunteer groups trapping greys to protect reds, many of which have existed for over a decade. Several years ago they grouped together to form Northern Red Squirrels (NRS), an umbrella organisation which ensures the most effective and joined-up response to the threat of grey squirrels within Cumbria and Northumberland.
