North Wales In the past few years these groups have managed to turn around the fortunes of the island’s red squirrel population. Thanks to their hard work trapping and culling greys, in the past decade the red squirrel population has grown exponentially. It is now estimated that there are some 300+ red squirrels on Anglesey, compared with a population of just 40 in 1998.
